Passover is coming -- need new dishes?

Passover was always my favorite holiday. Growing up in a traditional, but not-so-observant home, Pessach was the holiday that we went all out for. My early memories are all of a HUGE production of taking out all of the Passover dishes, massive all-night cleaning sessions to get the house (especially the kitchen) cleaned for the holiday -- and THEN.... the cooking would begin!!! So much work went into that holiday... but it was oh, so very worth it!

Passover was when all the special dishes came out.... my grandfather's delicately etched wine glasses with the special decanters.... the REAL silverware...... the special little sugar bowl with the little tongs - because we had to have sugar cubes on Passover, not regular granulated sugar... the cute little silver salt cellar....... and of course, we can't forget - enough dishes to feed an army in style!!! I guess I must have inherited that obsession with dishes after all! My mother probably had enough dishes that we could probably go through the entire 8 days of the holiday, without washing a single dishes... Well, maybe not. Because we always had huge crowds for our Seders... and many, many courses were served. So many traditional foods... we couldn't leave anything out... and each course had to be served on its own special plate.

Anyway, in my mind at least - Passover = Dishes. Special, beautiful dishes - and traditional serving pieces. We had some very unusual things that were used just at Passover -- a special tall pot, used just to cook the asparagus that was always served at our Seder; a cute little hand-washing thingie with a little pitcher - that was for my father to wash his hands at the Seder.. so many special things.

When I grew up, I went to live in Israel. And of course Israelis go all out at Passover time... it's the great excuse to get some new dishes - and the home decor stores go all out! So.... here is the point that I was working up to...

Even if you don't need a Seder Plate for the Holiday -- Passover is a great excuse to buy something beautiful -- buy something for yourself... buy some gifts... Buy a Gift that will bring pleasure for many years to come -- and who knows? Maybe it will become a tradition and even an heirloom!
